Originally a manufacturer for some of the world's finest retailers the label continues to produce boots and shoes using the same production techniques originally developed by founders Joseph and Arthur Cheaney. Established in 1886 by founders Joseph and Athur Cheaney Joseph Cheaney & Sons is ones of the world's most reputable shoemakers. Starting life out in a small premises in Desborough the brothers focused upon all aspects of shoemaking from the cutting out of the leather (clicking) to the final polishing, rather than only part of the process, which at the time would typically be done in outhouses, known as shops, at the bottom of their gardens. Moving to their current factory in 1896 the first 80 years of the business saw the factory make shoes exclusively for some of the finest retailers around the world, branded to each labels individual company requirements.
Joseph Humphrey Cheaney, the founder’s grandson who worked for the company for 51 years, realised that the company’s future lay in building up its own Cheaney brand for its home and export markets. In 1964, determined to see the legacy built up by the family continue, the decision was taken to sell the business to Church’s English Shoes. The Cheaney brand then became available to retailers all over the world, backed by a comprehensive instock service from the Desborough factory. Two years later the label won it's first Queen's award for Enterprise in International Trade - which it again won in 1971 and 2016.
Now owned by Jonathan and William Church the label continues to represent the finest British craftsmanship with a reputation of producing premium footwear handcrafted from start to finish. Many of the designs are made from full grain calf leather with leather linings and have a classically timeless feel with the Avon Shoe or Tweed boot being two fine examples.
