Stylist Notes

The MIJ8 – Tokushima Natural Indigo Hand Dyed Intangible Cultural Treasure Selvedge Denim is a 16oz unsanforized Japanese selvedge denim hand dyed in Tokushima Japan, renowned worldwide for its indigo dyeing traditions. Only a handful of craftspeople in the world are trained in traditional Japanese hank dyeing. In this method, yarns are gathered into a bunch called a hank, and then dipped over and over again into a batch of natural indigo. Since the process is fully done by hand, every yard of fabric is unique. Natural indigo is created from the leaves of the indigo plant. While most indigo plants come from India, the traditional hank dye method only allows for the use of indigo grown on Japanese soil. Very little indigo is grown in Japan each year, making these jeans even more rare. Due to the lengthy fermentation process, it takes about 1 year to produce a new batch of natural Japanese indigo. The big slub yarns create a streaky irregular grain with thick cotton ridges rising out of the 3x1 twill. Check the weft to see the twill line distortion. The Unsanforized fabric avoids the standard finishing processes of heating, stretching, steaming, and singing to protect all of the natural character of the fabric, but it is preshrunk using tempi-treatment. Knowing that there is no promise of making another jean like this, the detailing takes even the MIJ series to a higher plane: iron buttons that will rust, copper rivets that will oxidize, raised belt loops that will fade, a Japanese tan shell cordovan leather patch featuring the “Flower of Carnage” logo, the MIJ maple leaf embroidered onto the back pocket, the micro busted outseam, the vintage pink selvedge ID, the selvedge button fly. Dyed, woven, cut, sewn, built in Japan.

Each pair will be delivered in a beautifully made jointed construction pine box.
